The Lineage of Samuel Warner, Early Settler of Pomfret, Connecticut

The Lineage of Samuel Warner, Early Settler of Pomfret, Connecticut (b 1668, Ipswich - d 1752 Pomfret)

Samuel Warner came to  Pomfret while it was still known as the Mashamoquet Purchase as identified in the colonial context.  Twelve men of Roxbury acquired the land on May 1, 1686.  Settlement only began after it had been surveyed in 1694.  Vital Records of Woodstock (just north of Pomfret area) verify that Samuel married Mehetabel Sabin, 2 January 1694/5 and their first child, Benjamin is born the following September.

The Ancestors of Peter Parker and Sarah Ruggles, [Linzee 1913] provides the sources and evidence for the lineage in the genealogical entry (22) Samuel Warner, which begins on page 209.

Samuel's father died in 1703.  As a result of this Samuel's full-brother Richard compensated Samuel for his portion of the estate.  Richard also sought out Eleazer, half-brother by the father's second wife and compensated him as well.  The documented administrative records thus establishes the connections of the brothers and the residence of Samuel Warner, the subject in the title, as Pomfret Connecticut in 1703.

Samuel, the father who died at Groton in 1703, is also documented as the son of (44) John Warner beginning on page 303 of [Linzee 1913].  In the first sentence of that section John Warner is identified as the son of (88) William Warner of Ipswich, Massachusetts begins on page 430.

I cannot say that I have retraced all of the evidence or verified every reference but I have examined many of the sources, reasonably available and others, and not found inconsistencies.  My major purpose was to establish that the Samuel Warner residing in the Pomfret area (and the only one) was a descendant of William Warner who is documented as emigrating from Boxted, Essex, England to Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1636-37.

As a second source, published much later, consider, Register of the ancestors and descendants of Samuel (7th) Warner of Wilbraham, Mass. : with descendants to the seventh generation of John (2nd) (William (1st)) Warner of Ipswich, Mass. [Radasch 1956].
