Y-DNA: Common Branch Checkpoint (R-Z356) 2021.09.06 Mariott, Gates, Warner

Documents Y FTDNA Haplotree as of September 6th, 2021

Note: 10/21/2023

The FTDNA Block Tree no longer looks like this annotated snapshot from 2021. The Gates haplogroup R-FT345366 now stands at the head of a branch from R-BY65758. R-BY69380 haplogroup now contains Richard Seth Warner along with several other 'male cousins'. R-BY65758 is drawn as the parent of R-FT345366 and R-BY69380. One can look at the FTDNA Public Tree to follow changes as more males have their Y-DNA tested at the Big Y-700 level.

Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor for Steven M Gates and William A Gates

Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor for

Steven M Gates and William A Gates

Authored August 21st, 2021

Family Tree DNA has provided a table to translate “Genetic Distance” to years between two individuals. Steven and I share grand-parents Samuel Gates and Ruth Olmsted. His grandfather Samuel and my grandfather Noah were sons of Samuel and Ruth.

Using the TMRCA table below we fall on the column for STR Y-111 test with four genetic steps between us (row 4). The range 553-103 ybp (“years before present”) with I assume a mean of 283 is a starting point. Samuel and Ruth were married in 1758, so subtracting that from the present, 2021 yields a result of 263 ybp (and their first child Samuel). Noah was born about 1766.

This calculation result is just about where we would expect it to be and very close to the mean of 283 ybp. It is further borne out by genealogical findings of Elmer Gates, and my own secondary verification of Connecticut vital records.

Our estimated haplogroup from STR is R-M269, which can be refined by Big-Y700 SNP testing.

Maps of Connecticut from the late 1700s: Gates and Related Family Movements

These maps are from the Library of Congress and date beyond any copyright restrictions.  Of course sources and particulars should be credited.

I intend to use this page to illustrate Gates and related families migration and movement in Colonial times and somewhat beyond.

Barbour Scans and Compilations ... subject to revisions! Note: Since families may have move during the various "spans" of years, double counting, i.e., the same family in more than one town could happen.
